From Store Haus to
Southbury Self Storage

A 1966 factory, a 1988 storage conversion & two dogs who introduced the old owner to the new one. This building has been storing Southbury's stuff for over 35 years. Here's the story.

Where it all began

Seven decades on Poverty Road

1949

Dav-Matic is born

Anthony Polmon, a veteran returning from WWII, starts the manufacturing firm Dav-Matic, Inc. in Waterbury.

1966

The building goes up

Dav-Matic builds the structure that now houses Southbury Self Storage.

1975

A second generation

David, the son of the founder & himself a war veteran, buys the business from his dad & runs it for the next twelve years.

1987

Manufacturing winds down

With no future in Connecticut manufacturing, the production machinery is sold & the funds are used to construct steel self-storage rooms inside the building, using about two-thirds of the available floor space.

1988

Store-Haus opens its doors

The first storage customer moves in, July 1988. Within a few short years the original storage rooms are filled.

1992

Full house

The rest of the floor space is built into storage rooms in January 1992, bringing the total to 250 units.

2016

Toby meets Wolfie

Rob & his wife Samantha move to Southbury, renting an apartment next door to Store Haus. Their dog Toby plays every day with Dave's dog Wolfie, & Rob & Dave become friends, staying in touch even after Rob & Sam move elsewhere in Southbury.

2020

A new local chapter

When Dave decides to retire, Rob offers to purchase the business & property. The deal officially closes on March 5th, 2020.

2021

First expansion

A small expansion inside the existing building adds an additional 1,500 sq ft of storage.

2024

A new building

A new fully climate-controlled 12,000 sq ft building goes up behind the existing structure.

2025

More to come

Plans take shape for an additional 2-story, 28,000 sq ft expansion.

Fast forward to today

Owned by your neighbors

Rob & Sam are excited to be small business owners in the town that they call home. They both have full-time jobs outside of running the storage business & look forward to bringing their professional experience & personal touch into this venture.

That makes Southbury Self Storage a family-owned & locally operated self storage facility in the truest sense: when you call, text, email or stop in, you'll talk to Paul, Karol or Rob, not a call center.

They renamed the business from "Store Haus" to "Southbury Self Storage" after hearing multiple people who lived in town say:

"I always wondered what that place was."
The facility today

Still growing, still local

250+ units across four buildings, climate control, drive-up access & the same personal touch. Come see it for yourself, we're right next to the Southbury Library.
