Why it matters

We recommend Tenant Protection over homeowner's insurance

Relying on your homeowner's policy to cover a storage unit can backfire:

  • Your stored items may not be covered by your homeowner's policy
  • Your premiums could go up if you file a claim
  • Your homeowner's policy could be canceled if you file a claim

Avoid the $200 deductible

Be sure to use a disc or cylinder lock to avoid the $200 deductible. They're harder to cut than standard padlocks anyway, so it's a win either way. Ask us if you're not sure which lock you have.

The big question

Does renters or homeowners insurance cover storage units?

Sometimes, partially. Many renters & homeowners policies extend some off-premises coverage to items in a storage unit, but it's usually a fraction of your total coverage & it comes with real tradeoffs.

Using your home or renters policy

Coverage varies by policy. Off-premises coverage is often capped at a percentage of your total, & some policies don't cover stored items at all. You'd need to check your specific policy documents.

Claims can cost you later. Filing a claim on your home policy for storage unit damage can raise your premiums, & in some cases your policy could be canceled.

Your home deductible applies. Home policy deductibles are often much higher than the value of a storage claim.

Using Tenant Protection

Purpose-built for your unit. Coverage tiers from $2,000 to $15,000 sized to what you're actually storing, starting at $12/month.

Keeps your home policy out of it. A claim on your stored belongings never touches your homeowner's or renter's insurance record.

A $200 deductible you can avoid entirely just by using a disc or cylinder lock on your unit.

Every insurance policy is different, so review yours or ask your agent what off-premises coverage you carry. For most folks storing with us, Tenant Protection is the simpler & safer route.

Prevention first

Protection starts before a claim

Tenant Protection is the safety net. The facility itself is the first line of defense, which is why claims here are rare in the first place:

  • 64 high-definition security cameras covering the entire property
  • Fire & burglar alarm systems, with sprinklers in the large buildings
  • Secure access control, so only active customers can enter
  • 24/7 monitored alarm armed outside of access hours
